The program builds on students’ own conceptions and ideas. This makes students more flexible thinkers and supports higher-level thinking. In a Math Trailblazers classroom, a problem is presented and students activate their prior knowledge to find ways to solve it. Students develop and refine strategies, and solve problems in multiple ways. Research has shown that to build flexible thinking, students must first invent a strategy and then refine it. While other programs tell students how to solve a problem, the Math Trailblazers approach builds on students’ own thinking and gives students ownership of building their understanding. This leads to better recall.
