Math Trailblazers is based on the idea that mathematics is best learned in real-world contexts that are meaningful to children. Once students’ attention is captured, they can be motivated to build their reasoning and higher-order skills. If students are asked to grapple with, represent, and justify their own thinking and reasoning, they become better problem-solvers and develop a deeper understanding of the concepts. Students work actively and collaboratively with their peers to make sense of concepts, while using multiple representations and tools to solve complex problems. Students are given regular opportunities to explore, develop, discuss, and refine their strategies and mathematical ideas. This solid conceptual foundation gives students the power to develop fluency with mathematical procedures.
